Dissertation Length - No hard rule - DegreeInfo
This plot is beautiful, and interesting. It to suggest that overall, the mean length of a dissertation fell sharply between 1996-2000. However, there is a sample size effect here and there is not enough information to claim that there was in fact a drop during this period. If there in fact was a decrease in dissertation length, there could be several reasons. The Department became independent from the in 1998. Perhaps the academic climate was changing and dissertations were becoming shorter. Or, it could be that the Department of Mathematics historically had longer dissertations, and once the Department split off, its requirements waned from those of Mathematics. I bold the word mean because a better statistic here is the median since dissertation lengths do not follow a normal distribution; rather, they follow a right skewed distribution. Still though, using the median does not account for the sample size effect.
I totally second your thought about dissertation lenght having nothing to do with its quality but still every college guidelines mention that a dissertation should be 200- or more pages long. Actually, I haven’t written any dissertation. At the moment I’m writing my master thesis but my supervisor is always emphasizing my paper should have at least 100 pages but it would be even nicer if there are more. I just believe that in the end 50% of my research will just stating of other researchers’ data. And I wanted to do my own research and though it may not meet the requirement for a certain number of pages but it will be an interesting research and not just restatement of facts in another words. And in the end my motivation level is dropping. and aren’t helping at all.I just believe my supervisor is in the way of my research.
Like any other guideline, very important one is being strict to the volume of work required. Performing your writing, first of all, you need to think over the entire plot and briefly estimate the amount of pages you are going to provide as a dissertation. To write more than is needed is the same problem as unfinished theses and may be considered as a mistake as well. So, what is an average dissertations length? As we have mentioned there is no universal demands to average dissertations length. In most cases dissertations go from 30-50 pages up to 300. Never believe when someone tells you that a 200-300-pages thesis is a straight-out must.Basically there is no standard limit for average dissertations length, so do not forget to consult with the professor before starting to write and always follow his recommendations.
